The two thresholds YouTube uses

YouTube Partner Program (YPP) eligibility — the status that turns on AdSense revenue — requires meeting EITHER of these criteria: (a) 1,000 subscribers AND 4,000 watch hours over the previous 12 months, OR (b) 1,000 subscribers AND 10 million Shorts views over the previous 90 days. Long-form watch hours are the more reliable path for most faceless channels because Shorts views, while easier to accumulate, depend on hitting the algorithm just right.

Month 1 — Foundation

Your first batch of videos goes live. Initial metrics will be terrible — single-digit view counts, no subscribers. This is normal. The algorithm needs 10-20 videos to understand your channel's niche and start matching it to viewers. Don't pivot in month 1.

Months 2-3 — Algorithm onboarding

Months 12-18 — Scaling phase

Monthly ad revenue typically reaches $500-$2,000+ in this window for channels that maintained consistent posting. Channels that paused for 1-3 months tend to drop back; channels that doubled their cadence in months 6-12 tend to be at the top of this range. The compounding effect kicks in here — every video you've already published is still earning, plus your new uploads.

Months 18-24 — Mature channel revenue

$2,000-$10,000+/month for high-RPM niches with strong channels. The variance widens here based on niche choice and execution quality. Finance, Legal, and Insurance channels at this stage can clear $20K-$50K/month; Sleep and History channels at this stage tend to land in the $3K-$15K range with much steadier month-over-month consistency.
