Rule 1: contrast wins, every time.

If your thumbnail doesn't read on a 1.5-inch mobile screen, nothing else matters. The single highest-correlation predictor of CTR in our data is foreground-background luminance delta. Aim for >55 on a 0-100 scale. Black silhouettes on lemon-yellow. White text on deep navy. Crimson red on midnight black. Skip the muted color palettes — they're killing your CTR.

Rule 2: 3-word text or no text.

Every successful template we've validated either has zero text on the thumbnail (relying on image and curiosity), or has exactly 2-3 words in massive, high-contrast type. Anything in between — 5-7 word headlines, paragraph-sized captions — kills CTR by 30-40%. Mobile viewers don't read; they pattern-match.

Rule 3: emotion beats information.

Thumbnails that show or imply a strong emotion — surprise, fear, awe — outperform purely informational thumbnails 2:1, even in serious niches like finance and legal. For faceless channels, this means using objects, locations, or visual metaphors that evoke emotion: a burning dollar bill, a courtroom gavel in motion, ruins of a city.
